Please bring a current Motor Vehicle Record (Court Purpose), School Bus Eligibility Card (must not be older than 30 days) and your driver license.

Must be a minimum of 23 years of age with a clean driving record, no criminal convictions under the Illinois Safe Ride Act, drug free and able to complete a minimum of 14 days of training

Training consists of preparation for Commercial Driver License General Knowledge, Passenger and School Bus Endorsements

15 hours of comprehensive school bus classroom training

Minimum of 30 hours of behind the wheel training.

Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation and School Bus Physical Examination.

Criminal Background Check is required.

Must provide a minimum of three years of work history, including references, background history will be verified.

It has always been the policy of Sunrise to recruit and hire within the communities that we serve.  We carefully screen each applicant through a multi-layered process of applications, driving record checks, prior employment history, Illinois State Police and FBI live scan criminal background checks.  Each candidate undergoes a thorough classroom and behind the wheel training process.  Additionally each candidate must successfully complete a DOT physical and drug screen.

All of our drivers undergo in service training that includes behind the wheel observation, road evaluation and up to 20 hours of classroom instruction.  Employees driving records are checked at a minimum twice each year and are required to undergo annual physical examinations.  Drivers are subject to drug testing at least annually and on a random basis.

Sunrise drivers have available to them a competitive starting wage, an excellent safe-driver bonus program, attendance bonuses, paid holidays, paid in-service meetings and life insurance benefits.

Sunrise accepts applications at the above listed facilities between the hours of 9 am through 3 pm Monday through Friday.  Applicants must provide a current motor vehicle driving record as well as employment history for the past three years.

Once accepted into training, applicants undergo classroom training to assist them in preparing for the mandatory CDL, Passenger and School Bus written exams.  Upon completion of the written examinations, each applicant is required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of behind the wheel training. 

Upon satisfactory completion of the training, physical and criminal background checks, the applicant is road tested in a school bus and can now obtain a CDL and School Bus Driver credential.

Sunrise operates an average fleet age of vehicle of 7 years.  New vehicles are entered into our system each and every year while older equipment is retired.  All vehicles are automatic transmission, some of our fleet is smaller capacity vans, some is handicap wheelchair accesible and the majority is full sized (65 or 71 passenger) vehicles.

Maintenance is performed regularly on each vehicle through our preventive maintenance scheduling program.
